How to Change Your PSN Name | PS5, PS4 & Web

Learn how to change your PlayStation Online ID on PS5, PS4, or in a web browser, plus cost, free first change, and what happens after you rename.

You can change your PlayStation Online ID from a PS5, PS4, or web browser. The first change is free for most accounts. Later changes usually require payment. After you finish, PlayStation signs you out of devices, and you can optionally show your old ID beside the new one for 30 days. Official steps live on PlayStation Support.

Before you change anything

Pick a final Online ID you can live with, check that it follows format rules, and verify availability. A third-party checker does not reserve the name.

Also review PlayStation's guidance about older games. Some titles, especially older PS4 software, and generally PS3/PS Vita, may show quirks or data issues after a rename. Sony documents tested games and high-risk titles on games tested with Online ID change.

I've seen people rush a paid rename, then discover a legacy game they still play weekly sits on Sony's problem list. Inventory your library first.

  • Backup or upload saves when you can.
  • Tell close friends the new ID is coming.
  • Decide whether you want the 30-day previous ID display.
  • Have payment ready if this is not your first change.

What happens after a successful change

You are signed out everywhere and must sign back in. Most modern experiences update to the new ID, but some game UIs can still show the old name until you relaunch or re-sync.

If something breaks, PlayStation often allows a free revert to a previous Online ID for technical issues. Act sooner rather than later. Details sit on Online ID change issues.

Friends who only knew the old ID may need a nudge. The optional 30-day previous ID display helps, then it goes away.
