Are PSN Names Case Sensitive?

PlayStation's classic signup guidance states that letters in an Online ID are not case-sensitive for uniqueness. You generally cannot free up a taken name just by changing capitalization. You can still use capitals for readability when the system displays your ID.
What that means in practice
If CoolShadow is taken, coolshadow or COOLSHADOW is unlikely to become a brand-new unique ID. Focus on different letters, separators, or word order instead of caps-lock tricks.
Caps still matter for how polished the name looks. CoolShadow is easier to parse than coolshadow in a crowded friends list.
I treat capitalization as styling, not as a uniqueness hack. That mindset saves time.
When checking availability
