PlayStation Online IDs must be between 3 and 16 characters. Learn how length affects availability, typing, and style.
Your Online ID must be at least 3 characters and at most 16 characters. Shorter or longer strings are rejected during creation or rename.
How to choose a length
Short IDs are easier to shout in a party and harder to find free. Long IDs offer more creativity but can be annoying to type on a controller keyboard.
Most players land in the middle. That is usually the sweet spot for availability and readability.
If you are converting a phrase, count after you remove spaces. "Cool Shadow Arc" collapses fast toward the 16-character wall.
- 3-6 characters: memorable, scarce, often taken.
- 7-12 characters: best balance for most people.
- 13-16 characters: more room for phrases, slower to type.
Counting tips
Letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens all count toward the 16-character cap. Spaces cannot be used as padding.
If you are converting a phrase, strip spaces and join with CamelCase or a single _ or -.
Trailing digits count too. CoolShadow99 is two characters longer than CoolShadow. Plan for that before you fall in love with the word.
When length errors appear
If PlayStation or our checker says the name is invalid, count the characters carefully, including hidden trailing spaces if you pasted from elsewhere.
Trim first, then retry. Paste bugs cause more "mystery" length fails than people expect.
